We just submitted our latest review on sacroiliac joint dysfunction to the Spine Deformity Journal.

The sacroiliac joint lies in the pelvis between the ilium and sacrum bones and can be a primary or secondary pain generator in a significant proportion of patients with low back pain. Non-operative management is the first line of treatment and when unsuccessful, surgical intervention through minimally invasive joint stabilization has shown very promising outcomes.

Qualifications

Dr. Ratnayake is a graduate of the acclaimed San Diego Spine Foundation Fellowship at Scripps Clinic and the UC Davis Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has extensive training in advanced minimally invasive and traditional spinal surgery. He specializes in all regions and aspects of spinal care including complex disorders of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine using minimally invasive techniques. His areas of interest and expertise include spinal stenosis, disc herniations, radiculopathy, spondylolisthesis, cervical myelopathy, artificial disc replacement, spinal deformity, and trauma.

As a foundational value, Dr. Ratnayake believes that surgery should always be the last resort after non-operative management and that every patient should be treated as though they are his family. When surgery can be of benefit, his goal is to explain all the options and provide the most minimally invasive approach that will lead to the most durable outcome in the safest possible way. He also works diligently with physical therapists, pain management providers, and rehabilitation specialists to help get patients back to doing what they love.

During an appointment, patients can expect Dr. Ratnayake to spend ample time with them to make sure that they understand their condition in depth so they can make meaningful and well-informed decisions about their care. He encourages patient participation in discussions on treatment options tailored to each individual.

Dr. Ratnayake is committed to improving the field of spine surgery and has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters in the field of spinal surgery. He also graduated with distinction from the University of Washington with his undergraduate degree in Neurobiology.

During his surgical training, Dr. Ratnayake spent time in multiple developing countries serving the underprivileged with a lack of access to healthcare and looks forward to continuing this important aspect of his practice. Outside of the operating room and clinic in his free time, he enjoys an active outdoor lifestyle while spending time with his wife, family, and friends who live in the Sacramento area.
